"Where are we going today, Aunt Miri?"
Miranda looks down at the young asari holding her hand. "We're going to have a little fun today. You ready?"
Ayrene nods, a big grin plastered on her face. She sees the car that Miranda drove up in. A sleek, black convertible with silver trim rests in the driveway. Miranda buckles Ayrene into the passenger seat, before getting in. A push of a button and the engine roars to life. Miranda looks over at Ayrene, one corner of her mouth turning upwards into a sly smile. "Let's make your mother worry some. Hang on, sweetie."
She floors the gas pedal, peeling out of the driveway, leaving a blacked streak on the surface. The car speeds away like a missile. With the winds blowing through her hair, she can barely make out the squeals of delight from Aya. Glancing out of the corner of her eye, she sees the young asari laughing and waving her arms in the air. Once they are about ten miles away from the Shepard house, she begins to slow down. "So? How was that?"
Ayrene bounces in her seat. "That was amazing! I thought only my dad drives like that. Mom doesn't let her drive us anywhere."
Miranda chuckles remembering her own experience of Shepard's driving during the chase after Tela Vasir. "Your father's driving is certainly.....unique. Now then, I bet you're wondering what I have planned for us today?"
Aya's face takes on a look of pure anticipation. Miranda smiles warmly at her, "We're going to do a little shopping today."
"Yay! Does that mean I can get an outfit like yours Aunt Miri?"
It's Miranda's turn to laugh heartily. "You really want to dress like me, Aya?"
Aya nods, "Of course! You're so pretty Aunt Miri."
Miranda shakes her head. "Your mother would have my head, not to mention your father."
Ayrene looks disappointed. Miranda puts a gentle hand on her head. "Make you a deal Aya. When you get older, I'll buy you an outfit like mine. But you can't tell your parents about this. Deal?"
The smile on Ayrene's face makes Miranda's heart skip a beat. "Deal!"
A couple of miles later, Miranda notices that Ayrene has gone quiet. "What's wrong, Aya?"
"You can't fool me Aya. I've read people for most of my life. I can tell when you having something on your mind."
Ayrene looks up at her aunt with apprehension. ".....Mom says that Father's Day is coming up. My sisters and I can't figure out what we're gonna do for Daddy. We want to do something special."
She gives this some serious thought. "You know....I've never celebrated Father's Day before....." Suddenly, an idea strikes Miranda. "Ah! I've got it sweetie. Why don't you all make your dad an amazing breakfast in bed?"
"What could we make her? We've never really done any cooking."
"Give me a moment, I'm gonna enlist a little.....assistance."
Reaching down to a small keypad on the dashboard, she presses a sequence of numbers before hitting a speaker button in the middle. A few moments pass by before a voice sounds, "Miri? What's up?"
"Morning Ori, I hope I didn't wake you."
"No, been up for a few hours studying."
"I'm sorry to bother you, but I need to ask you a favor....for a friend."
"Sure Miri. What do you need?
"I need you to call up Rupert Gardner for me. Tell him to meet me at the Orion Mall in about an hour. I've got an assignment for him."
"We're going to help Ayrene and her sisters do something special for Shepard. You in?"
"Absolutely! Isn't Ayrene with you right now?"
"So then, see you at the mall Miri?"
"Yes. Thanks again, Ori."
"This is what sisters are for Miri. See you soon." The line goes silent.
Ayrene looks curiously up at Miranda. "Who's Rupert?"
"The Normandy's old cook. Give him the right ingredients, and he can make a culinary masterpiece. Who better to help make your dad a breakfast to remember?"
Ayrene nods. "I think I remember Mom mentioning that a ......Mister Gardner made a cake for my birthday a couple of years back. Thank you so much Aunt Miri for this! This is going to be amazing!"
Miranda grasps Aya's hand tightly. "Don't mention it Aya. That's what family does. Now then, let's go start planning."
-To Be Continued in the Father's Day Special!"
